India is ranked third globally in AI competitiveness according to Stanford University’s 2025 Global AI Vibrancy Tool — ahead of many developed nations — reflecting the country’s digital infrastructure, AI talent pool, and growing public investment. The global AI in agriculture market is projected to grow from USD 1.7 billion in 2023 to USD 4.7 billion by 2028 at a CAGR of 23.1%. India, as the world’s largest agricultural economy by number of farmers, sits at the centre of this transformation.
The India-AI Impact Summit 2026, held in February at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, brought together government leaders, scientists, and technology developers to chart the next phase of AI deployment in Indian agriculture. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, speaking at the Summit, stated that AI can play a transformative role in strengthening food security, climate resilience, and farmer incomes — citing Maharashtra’s MahaVISTAAR-AI platform, which has already reached 25 lakh farmers with personalised guidance on weather, irrigation, fertilisers, market prices, and government schemes.

Kisan e-Mitra and Bharat-VISTAAR: AI Speaking the Farmer’s Language
One of the most significant barriers to farming knowledge in India has always been language. Agricultural advice has typically been available only in English or Hindi — inaccessible to millions of farmers who speak Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Odia, Bengali, or Punjabi. AI is dismantling this barrier in 2026 with voice-enabled multilingual platforms that bring expert advice to any farmer with a basic smartphone.
Kisan e-Mitra, launched by the Government of India in 2023, is a voice-enabled AI chatbot that answers farmer queries on government schemes including PM-Kisan, Kisan Credit Card, and PMFBY in 11 regional languages. As of December 2025, it has successfully responded to more than 93 lakh queries at a rate of over 8,000 per day — replacing the need for farmers to travel to offices, navigate paperwork, or rely on intermediaries who may not have their best interests at heart.
Union Budget 2026–27 has taken this further with Bharat-VISTAAR (Virtually Integrated System to Access Agricultural Resources) — a multilingual AI platform integrating AgriStack databases with ICAR’s full package of agricultural practices. Bharat-VISTAAR will deliver customised crop advisories, soil-based fertiliser recommendations, weather alerts, and scheme guidance to farmers across every agro-climatic zone in India — in their own language, on their own phone, at any time of day.
AgriStack: Every Farmer Gets a Digital Identity
The foundation of India’s AI agriculture ecosystem in 2026 is AgriStack — a digital infrastructure that gives every Indian farmer a unique Farmer ID linked to their land records, crops cultivated, livestock ownership, and government benefits availed. Against a target of 11 crore Farmer IDs by 2026–27, over 7.63 crore IDs have been generated as of November 2025, including 1.93 crore IDs for women farmers.
AgriStack is not just an identity system — it is the data backbone that makes personalised AI advice possible. When a farmer’s Farmer ID is linked to their soil health card data, their crop history, their location, and their scheme benefits, AI platforms like Bharat-VISTAAR can generate recommendations that are genuinely specific to that individual farmer’s field, crop, and situation — rather than generic regional averages. The Digital Crop Survey linked to AgriStack covered 492 districts and over 23.5 crore plots during Rabi 2024–25, with nationwide rollout planned for all districts.
AI in Pest Surveillance and Disease Detection
Pest and disease management has historically been one of the most reactive aspects of Indian farming — farmers notice damage, then respond, often after 20–40% of the crop has already been lost. AI is shifting this from reactive to proactive in 2026. The National Pest Surveillance System (NPSS), operated by the Government of India, now covers 66 crops and over 432 pest species, providing real-time advisories to more than 10,000 extension workers across India who relay alerts to farmers in their districts.
At the farm level, AI-powered crop disease detection apps — including ParthAI’s Crop Doctor feature under KrishiVerse — allow farmers to photograph a diseased leaf and receive a diagnosis and treatment recommendation within seconds. These apps are trained on millions of labelled disease images and achieve accuracy levels that match or exceed those of experienced agronomists for the most common crop diseases. Early detection enabled by AI reduces crop losses from disease by 15–25% in documented field studies across India.
AI for Smart Irrigation and Pump Automation
Smart irrigation — combining IoT soil sensors, AI-driven scheduling, and remote pump controllers — is one of the most mature and widely adopted AI applications in Indian agriculture in 2026. AI irrigation platforms analyse soil moisture data, weather forecasts, crop water demand curves, and historical field performance to schedule irrigation with a precision that human judgment cannot match. The result is 50–70% water savings and 30–50% electricity savings compared to manual flood irrigation — with higher crop yields from more consistent, stress-free watering.
A Springer Nature study (November 2025, ICAR-validated) confirmed that IoT-based smart drip irrigation systems saved up to 46.88% water compared to conventional drip and up to 70% compared to flood irrigation. At the same time, the PM-KUSUM scheme has installed over 10 lakh solar-powered pump systems — many with integrated smart controllers — ensuring that AI-enabled irrigation management is available even in off-grid areas of rural India.
Government of India’s AI Agriculture Framework in 2026
The Digital Agriculture Mission, approved in September 2024 with a ₹2,817 crore outlay, is the policy backbone of India’s AI agriculture transformation.
