Introduction
A silent tragedy takes place in the fields every night in India. Farmers fall asleep, believing their irrigation pumps will operate throughout the night and wake up to their motor(s) burned out, dry fields and ruined crops. Approx. 32 million no. of irrigation pumps are operating across the country, with most of them being unprotected and unmonitored, causing daytime pump failure to be one of the most underreported causes of loss in agriculture in India. In this blog, she examines the extent to which the problem exists, why it is a problem, and what technology is finally making it a thing of the past.

The Scale of the Problem: What the Numbers Tell Us
Crop losses that are connected to the failure in irrigation, including pump failures, contribute a substantial percentage of the estimated annual agricultural loss in the country of ₹50,000 crore in India. In the past, ground-level surveys conducted across Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan have consistently highlighted motor burnout and dry-run damage as some of the top three reasons for unplanned gaps in irrigation during kharif and rabi seasons respectively. The issue is most acute in states that limit agricultural power supply to certain hours, typically late night or early morning. In states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, farmers get 6 to 8 hours of electricity a day to operate their farms, often during the night between 10PM and 6AM. This means farmers have to keep their eyes open to watch their pumps or leave them operating without knowing whether the pump motor has tripped, the borewell is depleted, or the pipe has burst. Just one of these occurrences can result in an un-irrigated crop stand in a critical growth stage and directly impact yield by 15-40%.

Why Most Farmers Are Still Running Unprotected Pumps
Although smart pump controllers have been available in the market since the early 2010s, their uptake amongst small and marginal farmers (accounting for more than 86% of India's farming population) is low. The reasons are a mixture of lack of awareness, initial costings and the lack of availability of reliable dealers in rural areas. This is because many farmers are not aware that they could save a motor, which costs between ₹15,000 and ₹50,000, and their crops, which can lose lakhs of rupees in a season, by paying ₹3,000 to ₹10,000 for a device. In addition, there is a trust gap. Manual pump operators have been used for decades by farmers and are often wary of automation, especially when it comes to nighttime irrigation, where they can't see what's going on. Where mobile connected smart controllers have made a huge difference is when a pump trips, a dry-run is detected or a voltage fault occurs, farmers are alerted via SMS or app and can easily see this without having to be in the field.
What Needs to Change — and What Already Is
Fortunately, there is policy and technology moving in the right direction. The cost of smart irrigation adoption is now lower, thanks to the government's PM-KUSUM scheme and PMKSY Per Drop More Crop programme, which have offered between 45% and 90% subsidy, depending on the farmer category and state. In addition, a few state governments have added state-level support, such as the Magel Tyala Shet Tale by Maharashtra and solar pump programme by Rajasthan, to reduce the net cost of smart pump systems to almost zero for small and marginal farmers. Conclusion
There is no need to accept failure of the pumps at night, it is a preventable failure. The technology is available, the government assistance is available and the cost of “smart” protection is now less than the cost of one motor rewind. For rural farmers who continue to pump their fields into the night, the question is no longer if they can afford a “smart” controller, but why not? It's whether they can afford not to have one or not. That's the crops that could have been saved with a device that costs less than a bag of fertiliser but which they have lost overnight in a dry-run burnout or voltage spike..
