Why Drip System Maintenance Is Often Overlooked
Many farmers install a drip irrigation system (some of them with government subsidies under PMKSY) and imagine that it will work well and efficiently without their active involvement. This is the most frequent error: Under certain water pressure conditions, drip systems are mechanical systems. With age, the sediment and mineral deposits can clog the drippers, lateral pipes can crack or be chewed by rodents, filter screens can become clogged, and pressure imbalance can occur across the field. However, these issues are not immediately apparent from afar. When a farmer is walking through a field, and notices that there is green crops, he assumes that everything is OK — only to realize that there are half the drippers clogged and that plants in half the rows are not getting the water they require. Once the first signs of yield loss are seen at harvest, the crop has suffered damage for an entire growing season.

Step-by-Step: How to Check Your System in the Field
The best way to verify that your drip system is operating correctly is to operate the system at normal pressure and to walk each lateral line from one end to the other. Check each component individually, beginning at the pump and moving outwards. First, check the filter unit. If the pressure on the outlet side of the filter is significantly less than the pressure on the inlet side, the filter screen is partially obstructed and should be cleaned. Most disc and screen filters that are a part of an Indian drip system should be flushed every 15-20 days or more regularly if the water source has sand or organic material. Then, check each lateral pipe for puddles, waterlogged soil patches, or dry patches of soil that are unusually dry. If puddles form around the pipe, it has a crack or a broken joint. Dry patches are a sign of clogged drippers. If water does flow when you pinch it at the lateral, it's clogged at the dripper and should be flushed or replaced — if there is no water coming out from the dripper, then it is clogged at the lateral and needs to be flushed or replaced.
