Introduction
One of the most game-changers and cost-effective technology shifts for Indian farmers is the implementation of smart pump controllers, which many farmers believe must be a high upfront investment. In fact, there are several Government of India schemes which subsidize smart irrigation and pump automation systems by 40% to 90% of the cost in 2026 itself. This blog details all the key schemes available, what they cover and how farmers can access them.
Why Government Subsidies for Smart Controllers Matter in 2026
Agricultural water management in India is largely dependent on its 32 million irrigation pumps, the majority of which remain unautomated, unprotected and operated manually. The Government of India has recognized that improving this infrastructure is essential to its water conservation, groundwater protection and doubling farmers' income targets. Central policy support for irrigation automation and smart pump controllers has improved significantly in 2026, as five of the six large central schemes are directly or indirectly covering its cost for the eligible farmers. The bottom line for farmers: To achieve the advantages of a smart pump controller, farmers can purchase one for as much as ₹10,000 in the open market and only pay ₹300-4,500 after subsidy; in some states, a smart pump controller can be obtained free of cost after subsidy through scheme-linked demonstrations. It is important to understand which scheme is relevant to you before accessing this support.

Scheme 1: PMKSY — Per Drop More Crop (PDMC)
Currently, the central schemes that are in favor of micro-irrigation and pump automation are Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) under Per Drop More Crop. It offers a subsidy of 55% to small and marginal farmers and 45% to other farmers on ISI approved drip/ sprinkler system with automated pump controller in 2026. A few states provide an additional contribution of 10–25%, effectively subsidizing up to 75–80% in states with limited water availability such as Karnataka, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. The PMKSY 2021-26 has been approved with an outlay of ₹93,068 crore and the corpus of the Micro-Irrigation Fund has been doubled to ₹10,000 crore with NABARD to speed up the coverage to 26 million hectares by 2026-27. Applications are made on the state agriculture portals or pmksy.gov.in and subsidy is deposited through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) after installation in the field and verification of the system. Scheme 2: PM-KUSUM — Solar Pumps with Built-In Smart Controllers
PV based solar pumps with smart controllers were considered. In Scheme 2, consideration of PV based solar pumps having built-in smart controllers was considered. The largest subsidy available in 2026 for pump automation is facilitated by the PM-KUSUM scheme by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). Farmers switching from diesel or grid connected pumps to solar pumps are eligible for subsidies of 60-90% in compliance with the Component B, which includes funding from the central government of 30% along with an additional 30% from state government and the rest from institutional finance. Solar pumps under PM-KUSUM are available as integrated systems with remote monitoring and control as standard – which is very significant for their adoption by smart controllers. As of 2025, more than 10 lakh solar pumps were installed and/or solarised as a part of the scheme. In locations without consistent grid power, PM-KUSUM is the quickest way to clean energy for farmers, as well as smart pump automation in one package for a subsidised cost. Scheme 3: SMAM — Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation
The Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation (SMAM), administered by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, provides subsidies of 40–50% on a wide range of modern farm equipment — including automation controllers and smart irrigation devices that fall within its approved equipment list. SC/ST farmers, women farmers, and small and marginal farmers receive priority under SMAM, with subsidies in some states reaching up to 80%.
For 2025–26, SMAM is implemented through state agriculture departments and the central agrimachinery.nic.in portal. Farmers can check approved equipment lists and apply online through their state DBT agriculture portal. SMAM is particularly useful for farmers who want to upgrade an existing pump with a standalone smart controller, rather than installing a full drip system. Scheme 4: Digital Agriculture Mission — IoT and Smart Farm Tools
The Digital Agriculture Mission, approved by the Union Cabinet in September 2024 with an outlay of ₹2,817 crore (2024–29), represents India’s most forward-looking support for farm automation. It directly targets IoT-based systems — including smart pump controllers, soil moisture sensors, and precision irrigation scheduling tools — as part of building a farmer-centric digital agriculture ecosystem. While its primary focus is on infrastructure and ecosystem building rather than direct per-unit subsidies, it funds pilot programmes, FPO-level deployments, and technology demonstrations that give farmers access to advanced smart controllers at significantly reduced or zero cost through scheme-linked channels.
Farmers affiliated with Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) or Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) are best positioned to benefit from Digital Agriculture Mission-funded smart controller deployments in 2026. For the official release:

How to Apply: Step-by-Step for Indian Farmers
For PMKSY-PDMC: Visit your district or block agriculture office, or apply online at your state’s DBT agriculture portal. Select an ISI-certified drip or sprinkler system from an approved vendor. After installation and verification, subsidy is credited directly to your Aadhaar-linked bank account via DBT.
For PM-KUSUM: Visit the official MNRE portal or your state nodal agency website. Fill in the online application form, upload required documents (land records, Aadhaar, bank details), and pay your farmer contribution share. After approval, an empanelled vendor installs the solar pump system with integrated smart controller.
For SMAM: Visit agrimachinery.nic.in or your state DBT agri portal. Check the approved equipment list for your state, select an eligible smart controller or automation device, and submit your application. Subsidy is disbursed after purchase verification by the state agriculture department.
Conclusion
The government's support for Indian farmers to adopt a smart pump controller is higher than ever in 2026. PMKSY provides subsidy of 55–80% for controllers that are integrated into the irrigation system. PM-KUSUM provides subsidy of 90% for solar pump systems with smart control. Stand alone smart equipment is eligible for 40-80% subsidy in SMAM. And FPOs and KVKs receive funding for the deployment of IoT projects in the Digital Agriculture Mission. The economic argument to operate an unprotected unautomated pump is no longer valid. The support is available, the only thing that needs to be done is to apply for it.
