Introduction
Groundnut does not ask for much. It grows in light sandy loam and even in poor red lateritic soil where most other crops struggle, needs as little as 450mm of rainfall to survive a season, and still returns oil, seed, and fodder at the end of it. For a farmer with limited land, limited capital, and no reliable irrigation, that combination is hard to beat — which is exactly why groundnut has stayed central to rainfed farming across Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Maharashtra for generations.
The 'gold' in the name is not just about the oil, though at 44 to 50% oil content, groundnut is one of India's most valuable oilseeds. It is also about what the crop does to the soil while it is growing. Being a legume, groundnut fixes its own nitrogen through root nodules, which means it asks for far less fertiliser than a cereal and leaves the field better than it found it for whatever is sown next.

Choosing the Right Season and Soil
Groundnut can be grown in kharif, rabi, or summer, but each demands a different level of commitment. The kharif crop, sown with the monsoon in the last week of June or first half of July, is almost entirely rainfed and covers more than 75% of India's total groundnut area. Rabi and summer groundnut are grown mainly in the southern states under irrigation, needing 8 to 9 and 11 to 12 irrigations respectively, but they usually reward that extra water with a noticeably higher yield. Light, well-drained sandy loam is ideal in every season, since groundnut pods form underground and need loose soil to peg and swell properly; heavy clay soils that crack or waterlog will hurt pod formation no matter how well the crop is otherwise managed.
Field Preparation and Sowing
The field needs two ploughings followed by harrowing to break clods and reach a fine tilth roughly 20 to 25 cm deep — groundnut roots and pegs cannot push through compacted or cloddy soil. Well-developed, disease-free kernels should be treated with a fungicide such as Thiram or Captan before sowing, followed by Rhizobium culture, which alone can lift yield by 10 to 15% by boosting the crop's natural nitrogen fixation. Spacing depends on the variety: spreading types need 30 to 60 cm between rows, while bunch types are sown closer, and seed is placed no deeper than 8 to 10 cm so germination is not delayed.
Managing the Crop Through the Season
Groundnut's early growth is slow and the plant stays low to the ground, which makes it a poor competitor against weeds — the first 30 to 45 days after sowing are when weeding matters most, and skipping it here costs more yield than skipping it later. Once the crop starts flowering, pegs form and push into the soil to develop pods, so light earthing-up around this stage helps pegs penetrate easily. Removing old crop residue after harvest is also worth doing properly, since leftover residue can carry soil-borne fungus into the next season's crop.

Is It Really Worth Growing?
For a farmer weighing input cost against return, groundnut's case is straightforward: it needs less fertiliser because it makes its own nitrogen, survives on rainfall that would leave most other crops struggling, and still sells for a steady price as oil, seed, or fodder. It will rarely make anyone rich overnight, but season after season, on land that offers few better options, it consistently pays back more than it costs — which is the entire reason it has held on to its old nickname.
Conclusion
Groundnut earned its nickname the honest way — by surviving where other crops fail and paying the farmer back for the trouble. Getting it right is less about expensive inputs and more about timing the season correctly, preparing the soil so pegs can develop freely, and staying on top of weeds in the first month. Done properly, it remains one of the most dependable low-cost crops a rainfed farmer can grow.
