Introduction

Walk through a kharif field in central India and you will still find maize with a few rows of cowpea worked in, or sorghum sharing space with pigeonpea planted in a wider row. This is not a new trend — more than 70% of the pulse-growing area in the country is already under some form of intercropping. What has changed is that there is now enough field data to say why it works and which pairings are worth repeating, rather than relying on what was done last season.

The logic is straightforward once you see it. A cereal and a pulse do not compete for the same resources the way two cereals would. The cereal takes nitrogen from the soil and uses height and sunlight; the pulse fixes its own nitrogen from the air and stays low, covering the ground. Grown together, they are drawing from different parts of the same field at the same time, which is the real reason the combined output can exceed what either crop manages alone.


Why Growing a Pulse Next to a Cereal Actually Works

The pulse crop's nitrogen-fixing root nodules do not just feed the pulse — a share of that nitrogen becomes available to the cereal growing beside it, and to whatever is sown in that field the following season. Field trials on pigeonpea and chickpea intercropped with sorghum or maize have recorded a 30 to 50% rise in nitrogen fixation and soil fertility compared to growing the cereal alone. The pulse canopy also shades the soil between cereal rows, which suppresses weed growth and reduces how often the field needs weeding.


The Combinations Already Working in Indian Fields

Different regions have settled on different pairings based on their soil and rainfall. Maize with cowpea is common across central and northern India, largely because cowpea matures fast and does not compete with maize for the growing season. In the drier tracts of Maharashtra and Karnataka, sorghum or bajra grown with pigeonpea is the standard combination — the pigeonpea's deeper roots pull moisture and nutrients that the cereal's shallower roots cannot reach. In Rajasthan's sandy loam soils, pearl millet paired with green gram has shown consistent results, with the millet's height giving the shorter green gram plant better light access without shading it out completely.

So Does It Really Double Your Profit?

Doubling is not guaranteed on every field, but it is not marketing either. A multi-season study on maize intercropped with cowpea ahead of a wheat crop recorded a land equivalent ratio of 1.71 — meaning that much extra land under sole cropping would be needed to match the same output — along with a benefit-cost ratio of 1.94 and a 43.63% rise in net economic return over growing maize alone. Separately, cereal-pulse systems under rainfed conditions have been shown to deliver the cereal's full yield plus a bonus pulse yield of up to 60% on the same plot. Put together, a well-matched pulse-cereal pairing genuinely can push income per acre close to double what the cereal alone would earn, though the actual number depends on soil, rainfall, and how well the row spacing is managed.

The safest way to start is small — intercrop a portion of the field rather than the whole plot, and pick a pulse that is already known to work with your cereal and your soil type. Row ratio and spacing matter more than most farmers expect; too dense a pulse population and it starts competing with the cereal instead of complementing it.
