Abstract
Millions of farmers in India travel at night to their fields to turn the pumps on or off, a process that's tiring, risky and unnecessary today. Inconsistent power supply for farming, anxiety of motor damage and requirement for farmers to get out of bed at odd hours for watering crops have long been the reality for farmers. This blog has already described very real, cost-effective causes and solutions that can make night visits to the fields a thing of the past and the government schemes that will help cover the costs.
Why Do Farmers Visit Their Fields at Night?
The reason for the night visits to agricultural fields in India is that the agricultural electricity supply is irregular. In most rural areas, the time the power is turned on to the farm is an unpredictable time 2 AM one day, 4 AM the next because utilities prioritize domestic and industrial use during the day. When power does arrive, farmers are left with no discretion as to whether to show up or not, or they may miss their irrigation window altogether. Farmers are also going to fields at night to find out whether the pumps have turned on and are operating properly, or are experiencing dry run, to ensure the proper amount of water for crop is available before sunrise, which would otherwise burn out pumps. Every of these reasons all of which are valid is directly met by modern pump automation technology and no one has to be physically present in the pit.
Solutions That Eliminate Night Visits Completely
The following smart solutions are available to Indian farmers today — each one designed to handle a specific reason why farmers feel compelled to visit their fields after dark:

Mobile Pump Controllers: The Simplest First Step
The mobile pump controller is the quickest and easiest solution for Indian farmers to rid themselves of the need to make visits at night. The devices are plugged into the pump's electrical circuit and can be switched on/off from a distance using a simple missed call or SMS (no smartphone or Internet connection needed). If a farmer receives a power supply alert at 3 AM, they simply can dial a missed call from their bed, power on the pump and schedule a time for it to automatically shut off. The entry level controller costing ranging between ₹1500 and ₹2500 are available to even the small and marginal farmers. The advanced models come with app-based control, scheduling, voltage protection and real-time alerts and fall in the ₹5,000 to 15,000 price bracket. Most of these are compatible with the existing single phase and three phase pumps up to 40 HP and do not involve any new pump installation.
Solar Pumps: Shifting Irrigation to Daytime
The best long-term solution to night visits to the field is the adoption of solar-powered pumps through PM-KUSUM (Pradhan Mantra Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyaan). Unlike pumps that rely on unreliable electricity schedules, solar pumps work during the day eliminating the need for farmers to venture out after nightfall. The results from the Surya Raitha programme of Karnataka reveal that farmers using solar pumps have reduced their energy expenditure by 40% and even stopped night-time pumping. The farmers are entitled to subsidy for solar pumps up to 60% under PM-KUSUM and in many cases state government will provide subsidy too. The scheme is being implemented by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). Seeing the full scheme details and to apply –

Government Support: PMKSY and Digital Agriculture Mission
Under the ‘Per Drop More Crop' component of Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY), the government offers subsidy, which includes 55% for small and marginal farmers in micro-irrigation systems with pump automation. With timer-based and sensor-controlled drip and sprinkler systems under PMKSY, water pump monitoring is no longer necessary during night time irrigation cycles. Since 2016, more than 29 lakh hectares have been put under the scheme. The Digital Agriculture Mission, with a total investment of ₹2,817 crore, also promotes the use of farm automation technologies based on IoT, such as smart irrigation systems, in India's efforts to create a digital environment for farmers. Conclusion
The night, field visits are not a farming requirement, it is a symptom of outdated infrastructure. Now every Indian farmer can get mobile pump controllers, automated timers, dry run protection, and solar-powered systems at affordable prices, and reclaim nights of his life. The adoption costs through the Government schemes of PM-KUSUM and PMKSY are easily affordable. It will be a fine day in the fields. Go to sleep.
